Portia was delighted at seeing Shylock so dejected. Outwardly, she urged Shylock to act quickly. Finding himself in such a dilemma, Shylock decided it would be all right if the money would be repaid by his friend. But Portia said, "You have demanded the contract be carried out precisely, and now it must be done, unless you execute the contract, you will get nothing." Shylock trying to sneak away, but Portia continued, "Shylock, you will take the punishment according to the law. Be quick to ask the duke for forgiveness." Shylock never thought that he would come to such an end. He knelt on the ground to ask the duke to show mercy on him. The duke spared his life, but decided to forfeit his properties: one half would go to the public, and the other half to Antonio, the victim. Antonio had no intention of taking Shylock's properties. He knew Shylock's daughter eloped with her lover to a distant land because her father was so stingy. So he suggested, "If Shylock leaves his property to his daughter after his death, then I will take nothing." Shylock had no choice but to comply with Antonio's request. He was able to find some excuses to leave quickly after that.
